A little hello

This is Shortbread, a corgi plushie that has lived with me since Christmas, when my wonderful boyfriend gave him to me. Some day, I hope we can get a real corgi, but a softie is a pretty good substitute.  Last night, I felt the urge to make something pretty and quick, and so with Pandora playing I crocheted this little lace collar from this lovely pattern by Emma from lululoves. I used some size 10 crochet thread in white and gold-metallic and a size 1.5mm hook.

So. For those of you who know me in real life, hi! For those who don't, here's a little about me and this space.

I'm starting this blog as a way of chronicling the many things I make both with needles and words. I crochet, knit, embroider and sew. I have loved crafting since I was a child, and the expertise of both of my grandmothers in craftwork (one is a painter, the other was a seamstress) has certainly contributed to my love of making things. I've been knitting for 10 years and crocheting for about half that time.

I am also a graduate student in 19th-century literature. I love finding Victorian needlework patterns, and my aim is to find ways of incorporating them into my research as well as my crafting.

I consider myself to be from both Texas and Spain (I spent my formative years in the former, and all my summers plus the last two years in the latter) and my love of these places suffuses much of what I do.

I also love cooking, which will come as no surprise in light of the Texas-Spain revelation.
